I am running for the State Senate from the 54th Senate District to create an opportunity-filled and prosperous economy; restore the promise of a brighter future for everyone; and in the process rekindle optimism and opportunity.
Dr. George Barber joined Greenville College in the fall of 1999 as head men’s basketball coach.
Before coming to Greenville College – now Greenville University – Barber served as an assistant coach at Bradley University and an administrative assistant at the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Rick Pitino’s staff for the 1996 national championship team. Barber graduated from Asbury College (now Asbury University) in 1986, before completing master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of Kentucky.
While at Greenville, George coached players who have received numerous national awards for outstanding student/athlete accomplishment and performance, excellence in competition, and personal integrity.
George Barber was named the 2016 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Coach of the Year. His Greenville University Panthers were regular season SLIAC conference co-champions in 2016 and overall regular season champions in 2017. His team led the nation in scoring, in all divisions, for the past two seasons.
In 2015, Dr. Barber received the Lee McKinney Distinguished Service Award given by the Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In 2017 he was listed among the Most Distinguished Men of Illinois by the non-profit organization Continuing Academic Training Children and Youth Services, which supports academic success for at-risk youth.
Coach Barber is the longest-tenured head men’s basketball coach in Greenville University (formerly Greenville College) history and is the school’s all-time leader in wins as head men’s basketball coach.
George and his wife Lisa have been married for 29 years, and have 5 children; Ben, Zach, Mary Ashley, Abby, and Sam.
